Saint-Projet-de-Salers is located at an altitude of 800m, bordered to the east by Mandailles and Le Falgoux, to the south by Tournemire, Girgols and Lascelles, and to the north by Fontanges. It is worth noting, perhaps uniquely, that a single boundary marker determines its point of contact with the communes of Saint-Chamant, Fontanges and St-Rémy-de-Salers. It is watered by the Bertrande, the source of which is located on the mountain of En Bertrande, at the bottom of the mountain of En Chavaroche, on the southern slope, and by the streams of Légal, Merlius and Viellespèze. The commune is sited on volcanic rock.
Its 14th-century Auvergne Romanesque church has a magnificent gable bell-tower that was added in the 18th century.
The Légal (1231m) and Saint-Georges (952m) passes offer stunning views over the Doire, Bertrande and Aspre valleys.
