Girgols lies to the south-east of Saint-Cernin, bordered to the north by Tournemire and to the south by Laroquevielle. The Doire and other rivers irrigate its pastures. Girgols, the least populated commune in the former Canton of Saint-Cernin, has the particularity of having its territory divided into two sections: Girgols and le Rieu. Each section of the Commune has its own church, cemetery, old schools and gîtes. Mainly agricultural in nature, this commune is made up of numerous hamlets (the village of Girgols, Le Moulin, Broussette, Soulages, Aybre, La Bastide, Le Rieu, Auriol, le Preix, Le Puech, Rangouse, Le Bruel), offering a wide variety of landscapes, woods, meadows, mountain pastures, streams and footpaths. This commune has a rich architectural heritage: in Girgols, the Notre-Dame church is a remarkable 12th-century Romanesque monument with a Romanesque apse and façade, a gable bell tower and a Gothic nave. This religious building once belonged to the Lords of Tournemire. There are also a number of stone wayside crosses and a fountain with a wash-house in the village square. The Rieu section features civil architecture, with its underground passageways, and sacred architecture, with its 19th-century church and fountain with wash-house.
